25 Places I Visited in 2012

While deciding what kind of posts to write as re-caps for 2012, I came across this one on Elle’s blog, and I knew I just had to steal it! This year was all about travel for me, and I want to look back on the most memorable places I saw for a long time. Although Elle made it 10 places she visited, I found that there were at least 25 I wanted to look back on in 2012!

What are some memorable places you got to see this year?

Eurotrip 2012: London, England

We left Nice, France relatively early in the morning for our flight to London. We arrived at Heathrow airport in the early afternoon and enjoyed an hour-long ride on their underground system. I was completely under dressed in shorts and a tank top, but I still felt like the extreme heat from Southern France was just radiating from me. I wouldn’t put pants on until that evening when I finally adjusted to the chillier London temperatures.

Our hostel was located on King’s Cross Road, and it was called Clink 78. I loved this hostel SO MUCH. It’s inside an old courthouse; the computer room is literally in the old court room, and the whole place is decorated in bright colors, travel quotes, and the space is just so bright and airy because of the high courthouse ceilings.

We booked a 10-bed deluxe female mixed dorm which was really awesome too. Our beds were big, private, we had big windows, private lights in our bunks & lockers for our valuables above our bed. The room was decorated in vivid pink with dandelion prints. It was grungy and girly all at the same time. I loved the vibe everywhere I went in this place.

I can’t recommend this hostel enough. Breakfast was included in the price as well, and the hostel has its own travel shop with a fantastic girl ready to help you book things throughout London behind the desk. Although we found out on our first day that there were NO MORE TICKETS FOR HARRY POTTER WB STUDIOS, she still looked for us every single day and was so nice about our insanity over it :)

Once we arrived at the hostel and unpacked/freshened up, we put on some warmer clothes and began to walk the London streets. We walked, and walked, and walked…. and walked some more. We went all the way to the London Bridge; we took pictures as we went. I REALLY wanted to see the Shakespeare Globe, so we walked along the Thames river enjoying the London vibe.

Double Decker buses driving on the opposite side of the street? Definitely London!

The view on London Bridge!

Although Shakespeare was never my favorite to read in high school, it was still really cool to get to see the place where one of the most famous playwrights in history got his start.

Dinner that night was at the Hard Rock Cafe, of course! I couldn’t go to LONDON and not see this place. Unfortunately we got seated outside & we weren’t adequately dressed for the extreme temperature change, but we still got a really cool tour of London’s *vault* of music history. So many neat things in there!

The following morning after breakfast, we decided to join in on a free walking tour that was beginning at our hostel. We had NO idea why it was free or what it included, but we figured we could just join in and if we didn’t like, we could leave. It ended up being AWESOME. It’s actually hosted by a company called ‘Sandeman’s New Europe’ and it was founded by this guy who hated paying for walking tours and feeling like the tour guides didn’t give it a passionate go because they’d already been paid. His concept is that instead, you get to join in on a tour for free & if you like what you see, you pay your tour guide whatever you think they deserve.

We ended up being placed in a group with Mark (and if you’re ever in London doing this tour, I suggest you keep an eye out for him!) He was totally awesome and knew his history REALLY well. It was actually a “Royal Tour” so he gave us a small history lesson in London royalty as we went to see the changing of the guard and visited all the sights in London’s royal center.

Changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace (AKA my future home!)

Trafalgar Square and Westminster Abbey

In total, the walking tour lasted about 3 hours and we got to see and learn SO MUCH about London’s history. I had such a good time and with our time constraints in the city, it was perfect. The tour ended at a little pub near St. James Park where we enjoyed some SUPER yummy fish and chips. London’s best!

Afterwards, we met up with one of our friends from Naples. He’s originally from London, but had never done any of the touristy things that we’d been planning on doing with our afternoon. We dragged him along to the London Eye and experienced some of the most gorgeous views the city has to offer.

It took a little while to wait in line for our tickets and do the whole ferris wheel; by the time we got out of our little London Eye bubble thing we were starved! The three of us decided we’d grab some dinner and (upon my request) some much needed ice cream afterwards. Dinner was really yummy! We ate at a traditional little London place where half the things on the menu made no sense to me and I had to ask what it actually WAS. I also seriously practiced my British accent and got really good at saying ‘Bloody ‘ell’ which for some reason is my favorite thing to say :)

We enjoyed the view of Parliament (and the clock tower) as we ate our ice cream (and as I craved waffles afterwards, but held myself back)

All in all, it was a really lovely day of touring London. I was so immediately in love with everything about this city, and I can honestly say it’s the one place I’ve been in my travels that I can TRULY see myself living in. Not only for the language, but it just has everything I could imagine wanting if I moved away. It’s a city that has it’s own character, and walking around there was amazing.

We ended our night at King’s Cross Station searching for the rumored Platform 9 and 3/4 from Harry Potter. If I couldn’t do the HP tour, dammit I was going to pretend I was getting on the Hogwarts Express!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

The next morning we only had a couple hours in London before we’d be catching the chunnel to Paris. We asked our favorite girl in the travel shop what we could do, and she recommended a nice walk in a nearby district with super cute shops. We spent our time there and absolutely loved it. I swear, there is just hidden charm everywhere you go in London!

I couldn’t leave London without a picture like this! I mean really, what kind of tourist would I be?

I miss London almost every day. I wasn’t there nearly long enough. I can’t wait to go back & next time I fully plan on spending much longer there than the first time around.

Next stop: Paris! Although we’d miss our train due to a hundred little things, we’d get there eventually…

3 weeks abroad

Well, it’s that time again- tonight I get on my 7th plane of the summer and head off to Europe! I’ll be visiting so many places that have been dreams of mine for years now, including Rome, Southern France, Paris and London. What with all the Harry Potter reading (and movie re-watching) I’ve been doing this summer, I’m not-so-secretly hoping I run into lots of HP monuments while I’m in London… And, you know, maybe an actor or two (I wish I was kidding)!

August is known to be one of the more quiet months in the blog world, so I haven’t quite decided if I want to write while I’m abroad or just do some re-caps while I’m home. I had a blast writing while I was in Brazil, but it definitely took some time away from just living in the moment and reflecting on it later. I didn’t use my journal as much as I would have liked either, and looking back that makes me really sad. So things may be VERY quiet around here while I’m off enjoying every single moment of my 19 days of European backpacking.

In my last few vacations, I had a lot of trouble letting go of my internet. I missed the routine and regularity of it. By the end of my time in Brazil I think I had done a much better job of letting go than any of my previous trips. My time in Europe is going to be so jam-packed that I just won’t have TIME to sit down and do much on the net.

I know I said I wasn’t going to set any goals for myself while I traveled all summer long, but if you know me at all you know I love goals and all this time away from them has been so strange! I’ve got a few things I’d like to keep in mind for this month while I travel.

—–

1. Write down the details.

On all of my trips except my time in Brazil, I kept a really in depth journal of my travel experience and I’ve LOVED looking back on it whenever I became slightly wanderlust-y. I want to do this again in Europe.

2. Read, but don’t miss out on the little things.

I LOVE reading on vacation- I’m actually having trouble deciding which books to bring in my backpack now that my Kindle broke- but I don’t want to get so wrapped up in my reading that I forget to pay attention to all the things that I’ll be seeing in Europe. I want to just sit and enjoy the beach without opening a book once in a while; I want to just sit with my thoughts sometimes & not feel the NEED to wind down with a book. But also? I want to get lots of quality reading time in when I can, because I won’t be able to with school next month!

Edit: I bought a Kindle at the last minute on a trip to the States and I’m SO SO HAPPY YAY!

3. Live in the moment & don’t get caught up in small frustrations.

Like I mentioned above, I don’t want to feel frustrated at having no internet connection for a while, and I don’t want to feel obligated to do any kind of updating while I’m there. I want to check e-mails, call home once in a while, but what’s most important to me for these 3 weeks is to live in the moment and come home feeling like I enjoyed every bit of Europe that I could. I’m also traveling with just one other friend. We’re great travel buddies, but I know we’ll need our space once in a while. I want us to make the best of this time together, and not let ourselves get into silly fights or anything when we’re frustrated or tired. I just want to enjoy this entire trip with her as best I can!

—–

Three goals, totally achievable, and they have me even MORE excited to just finish packing and GO. Being home for 10 days was a nice little break and a good way to cure the bit of homesickness I had in Brazil. I know that I could be here for a bit longer in between trips and I wouldn’t be vacation-sick at all, but I’m going to jump right into my European mindset and enjoy every freaking second of it.

It’s not every year that I’ll have a whole summer of travel ahead of me (well, I don’t think I could afford it, as awesome as that might be!) so I want to come home and be ready for the tough school year I have ahead, rather than be lusting after all my travels and wishing I was still there. I think if I really do everything I can to enjoy each day, I’ll come back home ready to face all the things I have to do come September.

Here’s to an amazing August, some possible blog updates, but most importantly another trip of a lifetime!

Europe Planning 2012

In exactly 2 months, I’ll be traveling Europe with one of my best friends. It’s been a long-time dream of mine to travel through the beautiful, historical cities of Europe with only a backpack, a journal, and a camera, so basically in 2 months I’ll be living another one of my dreams. Not to mention I’ll be crossing off a handful of items on my Life List.

I’ve written about my love of trip planning before, but as things start falling in place for this trip (and the frustrations of not being sure WHERE to start fade away) I can’t help but feel EXTREMELY giddy about it.

Last year, planning Greece with 3 of my best friends was one of my favorite parts of my whole summer. We spent countless nights around my kitchen table with coffees, dessert, our computers, and travel guides trying to figure out which hotels to stay at & which islands to see. It was very time consuming because we were FOUR people that had to agree on all decisions, but that didn’t make it any less fun. We always followed our intuition and we ended up loving our two hotels more than anything. They were some of the highlights of my trip.

This time around, it’s just two of us, so the planning has gone much more quickly. In just a couple get-togethers we’ve managed to figure out our itinerary, our traveling, and more than half of the hostels we’ll be staying at. We’ll be moving around A LOT more than we did last year, so we’ve spent a lot of time deciding how long we want to stay and most importantly, WHERE.

19 days isn’t a very long time to backpack through Europe, so we’re trying to visit the places that are new and exciting for both of us.

Needless to say I’m ecstatic about all the places we’ve chosen. Not to mention we’re ending the entire trip with a visit to the Harry Potter WB studios just out of London. I mean, best way to end off a trip to Europe ever? Probably.

Here are the places I’m extremely excited to see:

Rome, Italy

-via-

We’ll be spending a day and a half in Rome when we land, and I just cannot wait. I’ve been infatuated with the idea of this city and all of the history it holds for QUITE some time!

Amalfi Coast, Italy

-via-

I didn’t know much about this area of Italy until we started planning, but beaches are some of my favorite things to see in Europe and I heard these are BEAUTIFUL. We’ll be seeing Sorrento, Capri & the Amalfi Coast within a couple days. Oh and of course a quick visit to the lost city of Pompeii & the Vesuvius volcano!

Cinque Terre, Italy

-via-

By far one of the most beautiful, picturesque looking places I have ever seen, I can’t wait to visit these 5 villages and do the hike between all of them. THE PICTURES will be so worth it.

Venice, Italy

-via-

You can’t go to Italy and not visit Venice. We’ll be stopping through this city on our way out of Italy for one full day and night. I’ve heard mixed things about Venice, but I can’t imagine not at least SEEING it for myself.

Cote D’Azur, France

-via-

After a hectic 9 days in Italy, I think we’ll both be relieved to unpack our bags for 4 whole days on the beautiful beaches of Nice, Monaco, and Cannes. We’ve chosen to stay in Nice & travel from there to see the rest of the French Riviera. If anything, the hotel we chose is the reason I’m MOST excited to go here. It looks gorgeous.

Paris, France

-via-

The Eiffel Tower, Versailles Palace, The Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, a language I can understand & endless more sights to see… Paris was a BIG must for us on this trip. We’ll be there over 2 and a half days which isn’t nearly long enough, but it just gives me an excuse to go BACK some time!

London, England

-via-

I wish we had more time to see more of England, but one full day and night in London will have to do this time around. We’re planning on hitting the big sights and just getting a taste for the city after the Olympics before heading back to Paris and then, home. Oh and of course a quick stop-over to WB Studios for Harry Potter! Can I just run into Rupert Grint? PLEASE?

-via-

That’s the main itinerary behind our trip, more or less in order. In total we’ll be spending 9 days in Italy, 7 days in France, and 2 days in London. I truly wish we could spend more time in each place we’re seeing, but hopefully when I come back home at the end of August I’ll have had a true taste of the Italian culture, which is the one I’m MOST anxious to see first hand!

Have you ever been to any of these places? Any hostels, restaurants, or sights that you’d recommend to someone who’s never been?

A new countdown begins!

It’s no secret that I’ve caught the traveling bug, and I think after going to Europe last summer for the very first time it got even worse. I vaguely remember coming home after 3 weeks in Greece with 3 of my best friends and feeling like my ACTUAL home would never be the same to me again. I was wrong, of course, but when that travel high went away I realized that what I REALLY wanted was simply to have the opportunity to travel MORE. Instead of spending all my money on ALL THE THINGS that didn’t matter, I wanted to save & see the world.

Coming home from Greece last year I remember feeling one thing for certain. I LOVED Europe & I wanted to go back and see many more of the countries there. However as a student, that trip was extremely expensive for me. I told myself that  I would go back when I was no longer a student struggling my way through expenses.

Turns out, I just can’ t stay away from Europe.

If you follow me on Twitter, Instagram or if we’re friends on Facebook you may have already seen my news but… I’m going back to Europe for almost THREE weeks in August! I’ll be spending 19 days with my best friend traveling through Italy, France, and parts of England. Things may change a little bit here and there (we’re still figuring out our itinerary) but basically that is what we have planned.

I’m SO excited. We’ve been talking about this trip for weeks now, but as of Saturday our flight to Rome (and leaving Paris) is BOOKED!

I’m so nervous, to be honest. I love talking about traveling the world but I think this trip will be my scariest yet. I have to find a backpack. I’m going to be traveling into different COUNTRIES. Just the two of us. Probably staying in hostels with strangers. I’m nervous because I’m going back to a country I LOVE and I have all these memories from my last trip. I know that traveling has been SO good for me. I’ve ultimately changed as a person for it. It makes me nervous to see who I’ll be when I get home on August 26th after three weeks of living from a backpack. Last summer I had so much trouble re-adjusting to being home and I just don’t want to go through that again.

But most of all? I’m excited. I’m SO excited. I’m going back to Europe.

I’m visiting places like this:

Europe 2012. Let the planning begin!

If you have any suggestions, recommendations or tips for any parts of France, Italy or England… I’d love to hear them :)
