The Book Chat {Vol 17}

jp

A new year, a new effort at participating in the book chat as often as I can. Thursdays, as always, are book chat days over at Sweet Green Tangerine- link up if you like!

Today’s question: What are your favorite self-help/inspirational books?

I’ve read a LOT of inspirational books (well, inspirational to ME) that I don’t think I could ever narrow it down to a list small enough to share here. I think inspiration comes in every great book I’ve read- whether it be because I relate to a character, because the writing is wonderful & I hope to learn from it, or simply because the story itself is inspirational.

But let’s be honest, this wouldn’t be a book chat if I didn’t at least mention a few right? So with not a whole lot of context at all, here are some novels that greatly inspired me in one way or another in recent years: 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson, WILD by Cheryl Strayed, Night by Elie Wiesel, I Am The Messenger by Markus Zusak, OPEN by Andre Agassi, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares, Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda, Eat/Pray/Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, and Looking for Alaska by John Green.

Seriously, I could keep going. It’s crazy how many fantastically inspirational books are out there!

I’ve read far few self-help books, and the ones that inspire me in those are fewer still. As a general rule, I have a really wide variety of books that I thoroughly enjoy, and I have to say that self-help has recently become, when properly chosen, a new favorite of mine. Here are a few that I would recommend to almost anyone.

#3 Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser

I had a love/hate relationship with this book because of all the controversy that surrounded it’s publication… And the fact that I had to read it for school. But I devoured it in just days, wrote a kick-ass book report on it and got an A+ (the best grade I have yet to receive in University). I think that says something for its impact on my life. Although I didn’t agree with EVERYTHING Schlosser had to say about fast food (or the way he chose to illustrate his points) I still think this was an extremely insightful book and I’ve never been able to look at fast food the same again.

#2 Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

I wish I remembered the details of this book better, but having read it on my Kindle, I don’t have a copy to look back on. I read it on a beach in Greece, and was COMPLETELY taken by Gladwell’s research, his findings, and his writing. I have a couple of his other works on my to-read shelf and I hope to get to them in 2012. I briefly shared my thoughts about Blink on this post.

#1 The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

This still remains my favorite self-help book, and almost two years after reading it, I still constantly find myself picking it up from my bookshelf for a little inspiration. I wrote a whole post about this book, and everything I said back then is still completely true. If you’re optimistic, constantly searching how to improve your day-to-day life & an ambitious goal setter (cough cough) I can’t recommend Gretchen Rubin’s work enough!

I want to know- what books inspire YOU? What are your favorite well being books, any recommendations?

Sunday Inspiration & Links v.6

Hope you’re all having a lovely weekend! Here are a few things I’ve been loving this week.

-This weekend, YouTube has been hosting something really awesome and special called ‘The Project For Awesome’ which is basically a time for people to create videos supporting their favorite charities and collecting money from donations via YouTube. There are SO MANY amazing charities out there. I donated 30$ through www.dftba.com. If you’re a John Green fan, he’s selling off all the sharpies that he used to sign the 150 000 copies of his latest book with a signed letter of authenticity, and like every year he’s writing a novella on zombies, all proceeds going to the Project For Awesome as well.

You can learn more at:

www.projectforawesome.com

And also check out John Green’s website HERE where he continuously posts amazing videos created for the project.

- I’ve recently joined Pinterest (thanks again for the invite, San!) You can add me as a friend HERE. I don’t have much yet, but I plan on fixing that very soon. So far I had a lot of fun going through Harry Potter tags. :)

- 7 snacks that heal. Love this.

- 30 Things to Stop Doing to Yourself. Nice little pep talk, that’s for sure!

- One of my all time favorite Albus Dumbledore quotes. Thank you Pinterest!

- Thank you Erin for this picture and quote. I think you took it from someone’s Etsy, and I took it from you. I love Conan and I love this quote:

- One of my new favorite things to read are Jen’s ‘Scarlet Guides’ on her blog. One of my current favorites? Scarlet’s Guide To… What Not To Do in Dubai. Hilarious stuff!

Leave me links in the comments to your favorite must-read blogs. My Google Reader is feeling really empty these days and I need some new great reads. Leave me your link or your faves and I’ll be sure to check them all out!

Happy Sunday! What’s inspiring you today on the internet?

Sunday Inspiration + Links v.5

I haven’t done this for the last couple weeks because of school & finals, but I miss browsing the internet for fun links so I took a break from studying to find some fun things worth sharing!

-First, a friend of mine shared this picture with me, and as a huge Hunger Games fan I love it a LOT:

Seriously, how awesome?!

- I love this website. It’s basically like a thesaurus…But cooler. Which is always my best friend when I write because I tend to be really repetitive.

- Lessons I Wished I Had Learned Earlier. This is such a great list, everyone can learn something new!

- I currently want to buy everything on this website. Especially this shirt. You may remember Sheldon wearing it on this week’s Big Bang? Um yeah, want. Why must all the good ones be out of stock!?

- This moving panorama of Paris is AWESOME. As if I don’t want to travel back to Europe enough, this just makes me want to go back right this second.

- 100 Incredible Views Out Of Airplane Windows. Yep, awesomeness. Here are some of my faves:

The Alps

New York. I love views of NY, seriously.

Malaysia

Australia

Okay I’ll stop there, otherwise I may just post all 100. Such a cool collection though!

- Here are some really great ab workouts to substitute (awful) crunches. Easy exercises to do when you wake up, or just before bed! I could get used to doing these.

- Finally, in honor of my going to HP world in February and also because it’s been way too long since I shared HP pictures…

What’s inspiring you lately? Happy Sunday!

Live Inspired & Embrace a Passion

In September, I had the opportunity to guest post over on Kendra‘s blog about embracing your passion- a post that I had so much fun writing, I thought I would change it a little bit and share it with you over here.

When I was 18 and 19 years old I wish someone had sat me down and asked me the simple question “what do you love?”

Maybe someone did. I do vaguely remember my older brother trying to get me to focus on my future and to find something that I am passionate about. Life throws you so many curve-balls; sometimes at that age (and even in your twenties) it’s hard to remember what direction you’re headed in. At the time, I wasn’t necessarily ready to listen to his brotherly wisdom, but I wish I’d opened my heart a little more. I was just too busy trying to be me.

So I just want to take a few minutes of your time to remind you how to stay inspired in your life and to continue following your dreams. In my opinion, there is almost nothing as important as pursuing a passion.

First of all, what is the one thing that you cannot imagine your life without? I’m lucky enough to have discovered that I have a few: reading, writing, music, travel. There is virtually nothing more important to me in terms of hobbies. Funny enough, it took me some time to pinpoint those four things.

Second, are you living and breathing your passion? Are you doing everything you can to make sure that this hobby of yours has the opportunity to grow into something you can do for the rest of your life? I’m learning how to combine all my favorite things. I work in a bookstore, I take part in monthly conference calls with publishing companies to make sure I’m at the top of my game, I read book blogs & keep up to date with everything that comes out. I read each and every single day- even when I think I’m too tired.
I also go to so many concerts it would make your head spin. I try to meet the right people that can help me one day if I need it. I write for a music magazine- for free. But in doing so, I’m combining my passions. I not only get to write for a published online website, but I get to interview and talk about some of my favorite bands. I read music blogs, I keep up to date with more than my fair share of music news websites, I make sure I know what’s going on in my city when it comes to the music scene. I read books about music regularly. My favorite? Biographies on musicians who made their passions come to life through trial and error.
Finally, I blog every single day. I almost never miss a day because I want to keep pushing myself to feel inspired every time I wake up. The best part is I do all of these things because I want to do them. I will never settle for a job, even a part-time student one that I am not proud of.

Third and finally, are you embracing your passion? Are you letting the universe know where you want to be in 5 or 10 years from now? I spent a long time trying to be someone I’m not. I wanted everyone to like me so I would put on a face that I thought people would like. The worst part is that if you wear your mask for too long, you begin to believe it. But who does that make you, really? Now, I’m not ashamed of it. I’m kind of (book) nerdy, but I have no idea who said that was a bad thing. One of my favorite authors, John Green, he’s kind of a spokesperson for people like me, like you. He once said the following:

“Saying ‘I notice you’re a nerd’ is like saying, ‘Hey, I notice that you’d rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you’d rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?’ In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. Even ‘lame’ is kind of lame. Saying ‘You’re lame’ is like saying ‘You walk with a limp.’ Yeah, whatever, so does 50 Cent, and he’s done all right for himself.”

And isn’t that so true? I don’t know about you, but when a world renown author manages to become famous by being himself, I begin to believe it.

I hope that if you’re not already pursuing what you love, these last thousand words will convince you to take a minute and think of who you are and who you want to be. Even if your passion is something completely random and out of the ordinary, I hope you’re embracing it. I hope it’s the constant in YOUR life, the thing that keeps you grounded. Live inspired.

#102 On… Posting Every Day

{source}

This month, I vowed to participate in NaBloPoMo because I knew I wouldn’t have time for NaNoWriMo, which I’d been looking forward to for quite some time. It went pretty well for two weeks, although by the end of the second week it was getting really difficult to make enough time to blog. In theory, blogging every day is awesome. But realistically? It’s unrealistic.

Last January, I started to participate in the WordPress ‘Post A Day’ Challenge. It was the 102nd goal to go on my 101 in 1,001 list, and in the last 10 months, I have posted nearly every single day. There are some months where I missed a few days here and there, but in the 4 years I’ve blogged here, I more than DOUBLED my posts this year alone. That is kind of amazing.

Before starting to post (almost) every day, I didn’t really understand the blog world. I blogged as an outlet for my every day life- I’ve simply always loved to write and keep track of time somehow. In the last year or two, this little place of mine has developed into something I never would have imagined. My writing interested people; people who started to follow my blog, people I’d like to say are like real friends to me now.

I took the last two days off blogging because I simply did not have the time, inspiration, or energy to write. I know that the point of posting every day is to force my brain into writing overdrive, but there are some days where that is just counter-productive. Also? I had a lot of homework to do. I really wanted to get back into writing every day with NaBloPoMo, but as I think about it now I realize that with school, work, and the little bit of social life I can muster… It’s just not always possible. Sometimes I’m too busy living life to write about it.

The mix of NaBloPoMo and Post A Day 2011 have taught me many things about blogging.

First, it is only by writing regularly that you will become better at it.

Second, there is no point in feeling guilty about taking a day (or two, or three) off blogging. As much as I would love to take an hour a day to come up with something to write about, it’s just NOT always possible. I won’t always have that kind of time.

Third, although I love this little place of mine, priorities always come first. I often made blogging a priority in my life before doing other things, and I realize that’s not right. I have a lot of other things that are very important to do, and by posting every day I would lose sight of that at times.

Fourth, it’s quality, not quantity. I discovered that there were some days I would write just to WRITE. Anything, everything. Sometimes it’s nice to just write whatever comes to mind- I love writing rambling-ish posts- but more often than not they were fillers on days that I was feeling completely uninspired. Those should be blog-rest days

Fifth, posting on weekends is a tricky situation. I love to write for myself, don’t get me wrong, but readers don’t come around so much on Saturdays and Sundays. As fun as it is to write, it’s also fun  to get feedback on your work. It would be more ideal to use my free weekend time to SCHEDULE posts, rather than to publish them right then and there. That way I can be more sure that I’ll have quality writing and it will get some of the attention it (hopefully) deserves!

I still have just over a month to try and post as many days as possible, but I wanted to take a minute to reflect on the journey that it’s been to try and accomplish this goal. It’s been a hit and a miss; NaBloPoMo definitely hasn’t worked out as well as I would have liked, but Post A Day 2011 has been such an amazing experience for me. I think I’ve become an entirely new writer because of it and I already consider that goal accomplished, even though there won’t be 365 posts in 2011.

I still have an infinite amount of lessons to learn about blogging, writing and prioritizing. I hate *giving up* on goals, so admitting defeat on NaBloPoMo (among other things this month) is not easy for me, but I don’t regret it one bit. I’ve loved getting to know myself by pushing to find inspiration in every day life. I can’t wait to use all of the things I learned in a new year of blogging in 2012. I have great things in mind, and I can’t wait to hopefully continue to grow as a blogger here!

What has blogging taught you as a writer?

Sunday Inspiration + Links to Love

Weekends are a tough time to blog because they are notoriously a blog’s “down time” if you will. I never quite know what to put up on Saturdays or Sundays, but I’ve been meaning to do two things that could help me out a little here.

1) Start a weekly feature of some sort that I can do on a weekend day, that way I am always guaranteed something good on one of the days.

2) There is so much amazingly inspiring photos, quotes, articles and BLOG POSTS written every single week. I love when bloggers take the time to share some of their favorite links, and although I’ve done this once or twice I want to do it regularly to really show some of the talent that’s out there.

So I bring you my new Sunday posts! A mixture of the things that inspired me this week & the links that I loved most. Grab a cup of coffee, relax, and enjoy a few of the great things that I did in the last week. :)

- First off, have you been meaning to join a book club? Are you obsessed with Twitter? (Is this sounding like a TV ad? hehe) well a bunch of bloggers have gotten together & thanks to Stephany, we’re going to be kicking off our very own TwitterBookClub (read: #Twookclub) in November. You can request to join the Goodreads group HERE & seriously, just come read and meet new friends!

- If you’ve ever wanted to try shampoo or face wash without all the chemicals, check out what Ashley’s been using for the last year. Such a great alternative!

- I love Liz’s blog as a general rule, but she recently featured a guest post on How To Be Sexy… And it’s honestly just so lovely. Ladies, go read. Now.

- One of my favorite series of posts on Amy’s blog are her ‘Things That changed Her Life’ ones and this new one is no different. It’s short, but so so sweet.

- I recently started following Naomi’s blog & her recent post on things to love about books is just SO cute!

-I still dream of my time in Greece every once in a while, and this recent post had me wanting to go back and visit these beautiful Hovering Temples.

So gorgeous, right?!

- Take a look at these 5 most iconic images of photography. They are startling, but truly something to see.

- I love Kristin’s blog about her adventures working in India, because that is my current dream. She recently posted this which totally inspired me- it’s about how she made food for street children and how she was able to deliver it all to them and make them less hungry for at least one day.

And finally, here are a few images that have been inspiring me this week. Credits go to Tumblr, the awesomest place to find inspiring photos I have yet to find!

I just love this girls’ fashion style. So pretty!

Happy Sunday!
